  2008 Conservation Lecture Series

Zoo Atlanta envisions a world in which humankind values, protects and preserves the diversity of species on Earth. On select evenings in 2008, key players in conservation and research bring you their latest experiences for informative, inspirational looks at efforts to protect species at the Zoo and around the world.

In this year’s Conservation Lecture Series, you’ll hear from conservationists fighting to save animals in exotic landscapes and learn about their work with Zoo Atlanta’s collection. Each evening promises new insight into the status of the world’s species and ecosystems and the ability humans have to affect change.

Lectures take place in the Coca-Cola World Studio in Zoo Atlanta’s Conservation Action Resource Center (ARC). Presentations begin promptly at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with complimentary beverages and hors d’oeuvres served before the lectures

Conservation Lectures are FREE for Serengeti Members and above; $5 for all other Zoo Members; $7 for non-Members. Seating is limited! Please make your reservations at least one week in advance, or call 404.624.WILD for more information.

Gila Monsters and Beaded Lizards, New Icons of the Value of Biodiversity
Dr. Daniel D. Beck, Professor of Biology, Central Washington University
Dr. Brad Lock, Assistant Curator of Herpetology, Zoo Atlanta

Gila monsters and beaded lizards are two of the most intriguing lizard species in existence.  Both are venomous, but their danger to humans is often misunderstood.  In fact, their venom contains a substance that is helping to treat type-2 diabetes. Yet both species are vulnerable, and only recent studies by scientists such as Dr. Daniel Beck may be able to ensure the protection and survival of these enigmatic animals.

A preeminent authority on helodermatid lizards, Dr. Beck has traveled the deserts of the U.S. and the tropical dry forests of Mexico and Guatemala for 25 years in search of some of the world’s most elusive, legendary animals. Find out why beaded lizards, gila monsters and their relatives are poised on the brink of becoming the new poster children for biodiversity.

The author of Biology of Gila Monsters and Beaded Lizards, Dr. Beck has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biology from Utah State University and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona.
