Thursday, August 19, 2010

Guests may spot the Zoo’s tallest baby as she gets to know Abu

Atlanta’s first giraffe calf is just around the corner from her next big family affair: meeting Dad. The Animal Management Team plans introductions between the 1-month-old calf and her father, 4-year-old Abu – a milestone that that will eventually enable the youngster and her relatives to begin appearing on exhibit together as a herd.

The calf began introductions to her giraffe family late last month, when she met her aunt Mona, Glenda’s 4-year-old half-sister, and has since become acquainted with some of her neighbors, including three female ostrich. Although Abu has seen his firstborn, father and daughter have yet to have an opportunity to physically interact.

The online contest to name the calf continues through Wednesday, August 25 at 5 p.m. The winning name will be announced during a naming celebration on Saturday, August 28, at 10 a.m. Visit zooatlanta.org/babygiraffe to vote, and stay tuned for event details and updates on the calf’s progress.
