Celebrated mother of five receives a birthday ice cake today
Lun Lun the giant panda turns 17 on August 25, 2014, and Atlanta’s favorite celebrity mom will receive a birthday surprise at 1:30 p.m. in her habitat at Zoo Atlanta’s Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation Giant Panda Conservation Center.
Lun Lun is the mother of five offspring, the youngest of whom are Mei Lun and Mei Huan, the only giant panda twins in the U.S., born July 15, 2013. Her other cubs are male Mei Lan, born in 2006; male Xi Lan, born in 2008; and female Po, born in 2010. Mei Lan, Xi Lan and Po currently reside at China’s Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
As has become the tradition with giant panda birthdays, Lun Lun will receive a hand-crafted ice cake featuring frozen bamboo, fruit and other panda goodies. Her caregivers have not revealed the design for the cake, but giant panda fans are encouraged to join the festivities by visiting the Zoo or by tuning in to PandaCam presented by EarthCam.
Lun Lun’s male counterpart, Yang Yang, turns 17 on September 9, and he’ll receive a similar surprise around 11 a.m. on that day. Both Lun Lun and Yang Yang were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and arrived at Zoo Atlanta in 1999 on loan from China.
