Update on Newborn Bornean Orangutan at Zoo Atlanta
Monday, April 5, 2010
The Zoo Atlanta Animal Management and Veterinary Teams continue to closely monitor the infant born to 18-year-old Bornean orangutan Miri on March 30. Although Miri is an experienced mother, there were initial concerns that the infant was small and not as active and alert as expected. Based on observations made during a veterinary exam on Thursday, April 1, and a lack of improvement in his appearance on Friday, April 2, Zoo officials decided to remove the infant from Miri for hand-rearing by the Animal Management and Veterinary Teams. The infant is currently under round-the-clock care and monitoring, and at this time, his condition remains guarded.
Additional updates on the newborn’s condition will be provided as details are available.
