Zoo Atlanta's Black Rhinoceros Condition Guarded

Zoo officials announced today that Boma, a 23-year-old male eastern black rhinoceros, is in guarded condition despite several days of aggressive treatment by the Animal Management and Veterinary Team.

Boma recently began suffering from gastrointestinal upset, resulting in loss of appetite and severe electrolyte imbalance. The Veterinary Team is treating the rhino with intravenous fluids, oral supplements and a specialized diet, and is currently consulting with equine veterinary experts on further treatment.

Born in 1986 at the Zoo Dvur Kralove in the Czech Republic, Boma has resided at Zoo Atlanta since 1989. Additional updates on his condition will be provided as details are available.
