Vern the warthog passes at Zoo Atlanta
Thursday, June 19, 2014
Vern, a 7-year-old male warthog at Zoo Atlanta, passed suddenly on June 19, 2014. The cause of his death is not currently known.
Vern and 7-year-old female Shirley arrived at Zoo Atlanta in 2007 and are the parents of five litters of piglets. The pair’s most recent litter, male Lex and female Eleanor, were born in April 2014.
The Animal Management and Veterinary Teams will conduct routine tests to determine if there were any underlying health causes which may have contributed to Vern’s untimely passing. As is the case with all animal deaths, regardless of age, a necropsy will be performed at the University of Georgia through the Zoo’s partnership with the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Zoo and Exotic Animal Pathology Service. Details will be available in the coming weeks.
