Atlanta-born giant pandas Xi Lan, 5, and Po, 3, have arrived safely in their new home at China’s Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, where they will complete a routine quarantine period before moving into their new habitats.
Xi Lan and Po left the United States on Monday, May 12, arriving in Inchon, South Korea on Tuesday, May 13, and landing in their final destination, Chengdu, in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 15. Sam Rivera, DVM, Associate Veterinarian from Zoo Atlanta, and Kenn Harwood, Lead Keeper of Carnivores, accompanied Xi Lan and Po on the flights and will remain in Chengdu long enough to help the bears get acclimated.
Rivera and Harwood have reported that the giant pandas are adjusting to their surroundings, and caregivers in Chengdu are excited about welcoming the new arrivals. Additional updates will be provided as they are available.
