EARN Professional Learning Units (PLUs) At the ZOO!

What better way to spend your professional development time than learning and having fun at Zoo Atlanta? In addition to science and conservation information, every Zoo workshop includes an animal encounter! Participants also receive a grade-appropriate curriculum packet full of hands-on activities aligned with State Standards.

Register for more than one workshop or register with a friend and save $10 off the cost of each workshop. Discount does not apply to the Project Learning Tree & Project WILD or the Riches of the Rainforest workshops.


Project Learning Tree & Project Wild – 1 PLU

  • Open to elementary, middle school, high school and pre-service teachers
  • Dates: November 14 and 21, 2009 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Cost: $60 per participant
  • 1 PLU received on November 21, 2009
Designed to increase student awareness of the environment and animals, Project Learning Tree and Project WILD are two national environmental education programs. Join us at the Zoo to learn how to use these curriculums in your classroom.
 
More about Project Learning Tree:
Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an award-winning environmental education program designed for teachers and other educators working with students in pre-K through grade 12. Since its introduction in the early 1970s, PLT has been recognized as one of the premier environmental education programs in the world. Through hands-on, interdisciplinary activities, PLT provides students with opportunities to investigate environmental issues and encourages them to make informed, responsible decisions.
 
More about Project WILD:
Project WILD is an interdisciplinary, supplementary environmental education curriculum for all grade levels. The curriculum provides teachers with activity-based materials that teach young people about wildlife and the environment through hands-on learning.
 

Giant Pandas and the Asian Connection – 1 PLU

  • Open to elementary school and pre-service teachers
  • Date: January 23, 2010 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Cost: $60 per participant
  • Additional 3-hour supervised project at the Zoo is required to receive PLU credit

Take an adventure to the continent of Asia. Learn about Zoo Atlanta’s giant pandas and other amazing Asian animals. Use curriculum from this workshop to engage your students with Asian animals and culture.

Riches of the Rainforest – 1 PLU

  • Open to educators of all grade levels
  • Dates and Location: 
    February 20, 2010 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Atlanta Botanical Garden
    February 27, 2010 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Zoo Atlanta
  • Cost: $60 per participant
  • 1 PLU received on February 27, 2010

Where can you find chocolate trees, bright blue frogs, beautiful orchids, and apes that live in trees? The tropical rainforest! Through this unique partnership, the Atlanta Botanical Garden and Zoo Atlanta will introduce you to the plants and animals that live in the rainforest. Learn how people use rainforest plants, discover plant and animal adaptations, and meet some rainforest inhabitants up close.

Georgia’s Wild! – 1 PLU

  • Open to elementary, middle school and pre-service teachers
  • Date: April 17, 2010 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Cost: $60 per participant
  • Additional 3-hour supervised project at the Zoo is required to receive PLU credit

Explore the wild side of Georgia. Investigate the different regions of Georgia and the animals that call our state home. Learn about some of the things affecting species in Georgia and ways your students can help. Discover ways to engage your students with the wildlife that lives in their backyards.

CBN’s Why They Do What They Do at the Zoo – 3-5 PLU

  • Open to middle and high school science teachers
  • Date: Monday, June 7 - Friday, June 11, 2010
  • Cost: Free! Funded by the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience at Georgia State University
  • 3PLU received June 11 upon successful completion of the week's course requirements. An additional 1-2 PLU is available upon completion of supervised 10-20 hour project.

Discover the varied and amazing ways different animals behave when they are courting, parenting or simply interacting with other members of their species. Learn how the brain influences and controls animal behavior while linking the scientific method to animal behavior and neuroscience research. Use the curriculum from this workshop to engage your students in similar research techniques to make their own discoveries about animal behavior.

Animals Across the Curriculum – 2 PLU

  • Open to elementary, middle school and pre-service teachers
  • Date: June 15-17, 2010 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Cost: $75 per participant
  • 2 PLUs received on June 17, 2010

Animals are not just for science anymore. Encounter ways to use animals and animal concepts in language arts, math, and social studies. Use curriculum from this workshop to integrate animals into all your subjects. Make your classroom one that incorporates animals across the curriculum.

Saving Species - 2 PLU

  • Open to upper elementary and middle school teachers
  • Date: June 22-24, 2010 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Cost: $75 per participant
  • 2 PLUs received on June 24, 2010

Take a closer look at many of the endangered species at Zoo Atlanta, and learn about the issues affecting these species. Find out what the Zoo is doing to save these species. Discover ways to teach your students about endangered species and conservation concepts that are used to save species.

Make your teacher workdays or staff meetings both fun and educational. Schedule a date for the Zoo to hold a workshop at your school or bring your staff to Zoo Atlanta for a day of exciting professional development. Either way, Zoo Atlanta instructors will present hands-on activities aligned with state standards and animals you can touch. Select from various workshop topics including habitats, biodiversity, or animal behavior.
