Field Conservation in Africa
The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International and Zoo Atlanta Relationship
Our primary partner for conservation in Africa is The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI). Dedicated to the conservation of gorillas and their habitat, DFGFI’s International Headquarters is based on site at Zoo Atlanta. By providing space and resources, Zoo Atlanta enables DFGFI to focus its critical financial resources in Africa. Additionally, having DFGFI on site creates opportunities for both Zoo Atlanta staff and the zoo visitor. For example, Zoo Atlanta and DFGFI collectively support Dr. Tara Stoinski, a primatologist who conducts research on both the gorillas housed at Zoo Atlanta and the gorillas monitored by DFGFI in Africa. The knowledge gained from Dr. Stoinski's time in the field is used to help the zoo better educate visitors about gorilla behavior and conservation.
