Elephants require a large range area in order to gather the hundreds of pounds of food needed each day, and are now confined to parks and reserves. Elephant populations also continue to decline due to human overpopulation, poaching, culling, and habitat loss created by urban expansion. Zoo Atlanta participates in the African Elephant SSP.
