Rapid habitat loss due to logging and increased demand for palm oil have contributed to a significant decline in Sumatran orangutan populations in recent years, and researchers predict that orangutans will become extinct in the wild within the next decade without strict and substantial intervention in their home range. Zoo Atlanta is well-respected for its role in orangutan conservation, with involvement in the Orangutan SSP and various cognitive and reproductive orangutan research projects.
