Fewer than four hundred Sumatran tigers are believed to exist in the wild, and their numbers continue to decline primarily due to loss of habitat as forests are destroyed to produce farms and villages for Sumatra's growing population. Javan and Balinese tigers, the closest relatives to Sumatran tigers, are now extinct. Zoo Atlanta participates in the Sumatran Tiger SSP
